1. Veteran leader Robert Mugabe was sworn in as Zimbabwe's president for another five-year term on Thursday.

2. The 5th India-China Strategic Dialogue was held in New Delhi on 20 August 2013. Maintaining peace and tranquility along the Line of Actual Control in the border areas figured prominently during the talks.

3. The second South Asian Diaspora Convention (SADC) will be hosted by Singapore. The event will be organised by The Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) on 21-23 November 2013 and it will be on the theme of Connecting Global South Asians.

4. Nearly three months after he had to resign as Union Law minister in a blaze of controversy, Ashwani Kumar has been appointed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as his Special Envoy to visit Japan in the rank of a Cabinet Minister.
5. Tata Steel on 22 August 2013 was adjudged the Best Performing Integrated Steel Plant in the country for the year 2011-12 based on the recommendations made by a Panel of Judges that selected companies for the Prime Minister`s Trophy awards for the year 2011-12.

6. The comprehensive economic partnership agreement between India and ASEAN has inched closer with ministers of both sides endorsing the final text of the pact in Brunei.

7. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) on Wednesday imposed a penalty of 3.10 crore rupees on Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance for violation of various norms, including those related to early-death claims and group insurance.

8. Russian world number three Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the US Open because of a right shoulder injury, tournament organizers have announced.

9. Sensex surges almost 300 points; Rupee hits all-time low of 65 rupees 12 paise against the dollar.
