Daily Current Affairs : 27th December 2013

1. China is expected to overtake the US in 2028 to become the world's largest economy while India is predicted to overtake Japan that year for the third place in the same league, a London-based economic and business research group has said. The Center for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) said Thursday in its annual report that China's gross domestic product (GDP) in dollars would overtake the US in 2028, the China Daily reported Friday. The annual report issued by the CEBR, a leading economic consultancy in Britain, covers the 30 largest economies in the world.


2. Anna Hazare on Thursday said he would not be attending his one time protégé Arvind Kejriwal's swearing-in ceremony in Delhi on Saturday owing to ill-health. "I am not well," Hazare said when asked whether he will be travelling to Delhi on December 28 to attend the ceremony. The Delhi Chief Minister-designate had said earlier in the day that he would personally invite his "guru" Hazare for the ceremony.

3. Union Minister of State for HRD Shashi Tharoor has been chosen as "Person of the Year" by animal rights campaigner PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) for initiating steps for animal protection. Tharoor used the power and prestige of his office to advocate for the protection of animals, a PETA release said.

4. Bharti Airtel will offer free access to social networking site Facebook in nine regional Indian languages to its pre-paid customers across the country for a limited period.“it will offer free Facebook access in nine regional Indian languages to its pre-paid customers across India,” Bharti Airtel said in a statement.


5. Atul Sarpotdar, the leader of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) died on 26 December 2013 after a brief illness. He was of 51. Due to illness he was admitted to Leelavati Hospital in suburban Bandra on 25 December 2013 due to blood sugar-related problems. He is now survived by his wife and a son. Raj broke away from Shiv Sena to join Raj Thackeray.
