India Census 2011 : Important Points

The 15th Indian National Census was conducted in two phases Houselisting and population enumeration. 

  • Houselisting Phase begin on April 1, 2010 . it involves collection of information about all buldings. 
  • The Second Phase “population Enumeration was conducted between 9 Feb. to 28 Feb. 2011. In 2011 census first time the biometric information was collected.
  • Census 2011 mascot is a female enumerator (who everybody would identify as the school teacher next door). 
  • The provisional figures of India’s largest Census 2011 were released in New Delhi on 31st March 2011 by Union Home Secretary GK Pillai and RGI C Chandramouli.
  • The 15th Census of India and the seventh Census of Independent India-2011 was started on 1st April 2010 with President Pratibha Patil being the first citizen to be enumerated, followed by Vice President Hamid Ansari. 
  • The estimated cost of the Census was 22 Billion Rupees.

Most populous state in India : Uttar Pradesh(199.5 million)
Least populous state in India : Sikkim
State with highest fertility rate in India : Meghalaya
Percentage of worlds population having in India : 17.5 %

Literacy Rate :
Literacy Rate in India according to Census 2011 : 74.04 %
Most literate state in India : Kerala (93.91%)

Note : Recently Tripura achieved the highest rate of literacy in the country at 94.65 per cent and has now overtaken Kerala (93.91).
Least literate state in India : Bihar (63.82%)
Most literate Union territory in India : Lakshadweep (92.2%)
Least literate Union territory in India : Dadra and Nagar Haveli
Most Literate district of India : Serchhip (Mizoram)
Least Literate district of India : Alirajpur (Madhya Pradesh)

Density Of Population :Density of Population refers to the number of people that are living per the unit of a certain area. The population density is the population that is divided by the total land area.

Most densely Populated StateBihar (1102 /sqKM)
Least Densely Populated State : Arunachal Pradesh (17 /sq KM)

Sex Ratio: Sex Ratio is a term used to define number of females per 1000 males. 
Sex ratio of India : 940/1000
Note : Overall sex ratio at the national level has increased by 7 points to reach 940 at Census 2011 as against 933 in Census 2001. State in India having Highest sex ratio : Kerala (1084/1000)
State in India having Lowest sex ratio : Haryana 
Union territory having highest sex ratio : Puducherry (1038/1000)
Union territory having Lowest sex ratio : Daman & Diu (618/1000)
Union territory having Lowest population : Lakshadweep

Number of districts in India according to 2011 census : 640
