1. Senior IPS officer Dilip Trivedi, a 1978-batch officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre has been appointed as the new chief of the country's largest paramilitary force CRPF.

2. D. Bala Venkatesh Varma, a Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1988 batch, appointed as the next Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the UN Conference on Disarmament, Geneva.

3. The Export-Import Bank of India has extended a $125 million Line of Credit (LOC) to the Government of Sudan for financing the Mashkour Sugar Project in Sudan.

4. For the first time, Election Commission to use paper trail method in Nagaland by-polls. The system, called the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail system (VVPAT),will accompany the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM).
5. Delhi Police has arrested "Abdul Karim Tunda" alias Abdul Quddooss, an expert bomb maker of terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba and one of India’s top 20 wanted terrorists, and mastermind of over 40 bombings in the country, from the India-Nepal border.

6. An Indian-American professor of biological and agricultural engineering has been recognised for lifetime achievement by a top US environmental and water resources institute.

7. The world's top two tennis players, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, both suffered shock defeats Friday, while Rafael Nadal stormed back to beat longtime rival Roger Federer at the Cincinnati Masters.

8. Former Bengal Cricketer and Coach Kalyan Mitter passed away on 16 August 2013 in Kolkata. He was 79.
